The Yorii Theater, Satoshi Uchiumi (2007)

Studios

Please get in touch with us if you are looking for studio space in Kamiyama. The following two spaces have been used by artists during the Kamiyama Artist in Residence program.

Yorii-za Theater
This theater was built around the end of the Taisho era (1920’s) and was used as a theater, movie hall, and generally as a cultural center. After that, it was used as a textile factory for many years, and after the factory closed, the building lay unused for ten years or so, until NPO Green Valley Inc restored it as a theater in 2007.

Shimobun Atelier
Shimobun Atelier… Shimobun Daycare… Shimobun Shoe Factory… Kitajima Craft… The people of Kamiyama have many names for this place. It was once used as a daycare, and after that was used as a shoe factory. The place gets good sunlight, and the building has a lot of character, with remnants of its many incarnations still lingering in the building. It started being used as a KAIR atelier in 2005.

  2. Thanks for visiting our web-site and your comment.
Otani Yaki is well-kown pottery in Tokushima. Kamiyama also has a pottery-Kamyama Kobo. We still need to check if it’s possible to use the facilities as a temporary studio to experience and expand their skills and the possibilities with Japanese pottery. We would be happy to help you if you could give us a bit more details of your plan!

  3. Hello,
I am looking for somewhere to stay/work for 1 month in June 2009. I would be happy with a homestay.
Yamani House looks quite good as it has room to both live and work. Is the onsen within cycling distance if I were to get a bicycle? (I wont have access to a car.)

  4. Hello KAIR and Kamiyama Community,

I’m planning to come to Kamiyama in June, 2009 to photograph as a Henro.

I’m interested in staying somewhere simple as a base off and on for two to four weeks.

    Any ideas?

    Warm regards, Whitney

  5. Hello,
I would like to offer my studio and house as a swap for similar in Kamiyama for a period of about 6 weeks We are a family of four. We have a five bedroom house beside the Huon river in Tasmania and I practice from a studio just 100m from the house. The studio is set up for large scale sculpture, but would suit a range of activities.. If you know of an artist / who would like to exchange house and studio that would be fantastic. Travelling preferably mid 2010.
    Regards Matt Calvert…
