in Kamiyama

On the 14th (Sunday) we held the open atelier for the artists in residence for KAIR 2007, where people are invited to go and see the works in progress. I’ll spare you my commentary and stick to the facts.
First, we went to see Satoshi Uchiumi at the Yorii-za Theater.

Mr. Uchiumi is attempting a 7.2m x 3.6m oil painting. You can see the bottom half in the foreground, and standing up in the back is the top half.
Someone said “I wonder what it looks like when it’s put together?” and with that, we put it together to see.

This will be displayed in the rear of the stage. It’s going to be great!
We were able to see it up close, and then get a wide view from up on the second floor loft. A special Yoriiza open atelier.

Next, we went to see Vaughn’s atelier at the Josei High Kamiyama branch school. In the martial arts gym, there was Yamata no Orochi waiting for us.

The waterfall and the Akui River served as inspiration for this river made of dried rice stalks. This will be combined with video projections and sound for an installation piece. I wonder how it will change over the next two weeks.

We took a group photo in amongst Vaughn’s work. (It was the last day, so that may have been a factor, but) there were less participants coming to view the works than there usually are. Thanks to Uchiumi and Vaughn’s hospitality, it was a very satisfying event.
