Bring English-language books to read if you want reading materials because there is not a whole lot at the library.

I did not realise that I would have to depend entirely on using Japanese materials (film, paper, chemicals etc.) to produce my work, due to the lack of availability of materials familiar to me. However this was in no way the fault of the KAIR team, and the huge challenge I faced did not do me or my work any harm.

I only discovered that the Michi-no-eki served ice cream my last week in Kamiyama! I wish I had known that the first day! It was delicious!

That the place was so damn beautiful

There were couple things. When I first arrived, I had brought along a minimal amount of money. My thinking was that my stipend would be disbursed to me as soon as I arrived in Kamiyama. But it actually ended up taking about a week or more. So I would convey to the residency artists (before their arrival) the need to have some extra spending money for at least the first week of their residency.
This may have changed since I was there in 2003 but I would have liked a simple map of Kamiyama that provided locations to essentials (such as grocery stores, restaurants, post office, onsen, coffee shop and etc.).

I wish I knew about the big difference between daytime and nighttime temperatures.

I wish I had known that it was really important to take business cards in two hands and keep it on the table until the end of any correspondence. I wish I knew to bring slip-on shoes and that the weather would be really hot at that time of year. I wish I had known some basic phrases. I wish I had known about TOPIA to pick up some basic survival skills and perhaps meet some new people.

It can get really cold before the end of the residency, and I didn’t bring enough clothes.
