The ONSEN!
Birgit Rathsmann

A place that has special meaning is the temple over the bridge from the Shimobun. A massive red gate and it was always empty. Kamiyama has a magic because it’s like a forgotten paradise. That temple fulfilled many of the wishes I went with and gave me the silence to contemplate important problems.

The onsen, the cottages.

Mountains and mist! I especially enjoyed hiking up to the waterfall (Amagoi No Taki) and spending time soaking up the tranquil environment.

The Akui-gawa River flowing through the valley.

I guess the Kamiyama Skiland hotel; an eerie place which is beautiful and uneasy at the same time.

Kamiyama itself was so unexpectedly, and stupendously beautiful. The entire town was special. Having said that, Higanji was exceptional. I also loved the Korean restaurant. I also really loved the cinnamon tree outside of my studio at the elementary school.
I was privileged enough to work at the Awagami Paper Factory in Yamakawa and that was an incredible experience. The craftswomen there are amazing.

Two places stand out as having been important to me: Cotton Field, which I saw as an island of environmental sanity within a largely damaged environment (which became the focus for my work) and the Kamiyama Onsen, which I visited almost every evening. The hot springs provided a perfect opportunity to relax at the end of a hard day’s work and mix with local people.

The beauty of the river and the waterfall. The hot springs/bath and the wonderful friendly people.
