I would study Japanese more.

To do it all again I would have stayed one week in Kyoto before coming to Kamiyama in order to mentally prepare myself for the residency.

I would collect more and build less: the time frame was to short for me to completely finish something.
Jasper de Beijer
I would go to the onsen even more often!

Worry less ahead of time. Kamiyama will take care of you. My advice is, always be ready for an adventure. If someone shows up at your door and says “lets go drive for several hours on a crazy curving mountain road and see a waterfall, right this second”, say yes!

An additional week in Japan, prior to the start of the residency, would have been useful. During my residency I needed at least a week to recover from jet-lag, to acclimatize, to get used to driving on the narrow mountain roads and to create a mental map of the region since I was unable to understand the Japanese words on maps and road signs. I also needed time to find a direction for my work, which was a totally different direction to the one I had imagined before traveling to Japan.

Would love to come again, and do it all over the same way.
Strijdom van der Merwe
I know I would make all the same mistakes again.
