Tour the Yamani House

Yamani House is located in the Shimobun region of Kamiyama. An 80 year old wooden house built up on a hill. The Yamamoto family, who are lovers of their hometown of Kamiyama and supporters of the international cultural activities of Green Valley, have lent us the house.

At 200m above sea level, it stands on a slope overlooking the Akui River.

There is a main house, a secondary house, and a white storage building, forming a traditional agricultural family home. The secondary house is the one available as accommodation. Yamani House would be perfect for an artist or creator looking to spend a longer amount of time in Kamiyama. It would also be perfect as a gallery or performance space.
Now let’s take a look inside and see if we can find some of old Japan here at Yamani House…

Kamiyama’s own blue aoishi stones and a hedge form the outer walls of the garden, and inside we find some well tended trees. The owner’s personality shows in the layout of the garden.

Passing through the meticulously maintained garden, we enter the foyer and are met with a breath of fresh air…

The first floor parlour. Over 30 jo (about 60 m²) of space makes it perfect for an exhibition or a concert…

This would be an ideal communal space for residents, a place for receiving guests, or to have meetings or parties. There are plans in the works for making a fireplace…
Squeak-squeak up the stairs to the second floor…

The old-fashioned staircase is a bit of an adventure. Dizzy going up, scary going down… Try not to drink too much sake while on the second floor or you could get hurt climbing down!

There is an east room, middle room, and a west room on the second floor. However, the owner of the house is using the west room for storage so it’s a little bit like Bluebeard’s Castle – go anywhere you like but stay out of this room!

The east room has an alcove. Good sunlight here – a bright room.

The room is very spacious at 10 jo (about 20m²). What an atmosphere! What a view! Perfect for a long-term stay.

The white walls of one of the outbuildings can be seen, as well as a flowering plum tree and an Asiatic dogwood.

Flowers and trees for every season soothe the soul, the garden beckons… one could spend an entire day doing nothing but soaking up sunlight…

In the middle room, the old chest of drawers gives it a nice old-fashioned atmosphere.

The green valley that can be seen from the hallway… how beautiful!

I guarantee anyone can become a morning person if they’re waking up to this scenery every day.
