Municipal Sculpture
Diary 2010.4.8
Manufactured landscape by the river on Route 20 toward Ano. There are a lot of features: spray-applied concrete, cladding, perhaps some pre-fabrication, natural rocks, decorative casting, metal rails, markings. Whether they are seen as art or simply ugly it can’t be denied that features like this have their own particular aesthetic and place in the Japanese landscape (personally, if I was going to make a sculpture it would probably look pretty much identical to this one).
Here is an interesting little article with some fascinating information on the use of concrete in Japan: http://www.japanfocus.org/-Stephen-Hesse/2481
