The Road That Leads to Wafer Rock
Diary 2010.4.18
A journey along an almost pointless road (they are always worth it in the end) by two people. They carried a recently laid mantis ootheca attached to a twig of スダチ sudachi.
The road was tarmac and it was sweating black pearls. Ants got stuck in these because they are small and the pearls were very sticky. Although the end of the road was visible to the two people with the recently laid mantis ootheca attached to a twig of スダチ sudachi, they took no notice. Clearly it was the journey that was important to them.
Passing alongside massive fake-rock-valley structures they began to feel fearful. ‘We know where this road is taking us so why are we following it?’ asks the male. ‘It’s an experiment to determine whether it’s important to do things that initially seem pointless.’ replies the female. ‘But, i’ve got another question, sorry. Who proposed this experiment?’ asks the male. ‘I’m not sure.’ replies the female. And so, with a growing sense of foreboding the pair make their way down and around and back around and then back around again.
The male entomologist stares at the fake-rock structure. There must be an insect here.
The female entomologist becomes distracted by a shrub. There must also be an insect here.
Almost too suddenly the road breaks apart and dead grass is blown aside, everything is silent. Wafer rocks. It’s as if someone were hoarding them. They are different colours. They look like wafers and Aberdeen Rowies, and puff pastry. Delicious. Wait. The couple look at each other with white faces. It dawns on them. The road was an experiment but it’s purpose was different. The purpose of the experiment was to test whether a person is capable of eating rocks: the road acts as both a funnel and a motivational device for generating hunger. Omoshiroi ne?
The question remain however. Who designed the experiment?
