Awa Odori, Tokushima City 2010
Diary 2010.8.18
Huge crowds
along the riverbanks.
We ate okonomiyaki
with sauce.
We sat on the road for a while, eating, then
we hear taikos and follow our ears
until we begin to smell the amai ase.

Those troupes which are mostly just guys with drums are my favourite.

Daikokuten (the god of wealth), isn't it ! My favourite, too.

Daikokuten were awesome, a phenomenal performance!

Two of my favourite memories of Japan: naughty but nice okonomiyaki and the crazy, infectious AWA Odori dance that legend has it was the result of lampooning guests at a grand feast getting into a drunken stupor . "Eraiyatcha! Eraiyatcha! Yoi yoi yoi yoi!"
