Diary 2012.5.14
Been exploring the storage areas and peeking into the roof recently. Stray cats have been menacing Mi chan. She likes to explore with me but one day she got stuck under the roof so I climbed up to help her and took some pictures at the same time.
Underneath the metal cover is a thatched roof and storage space.
It was awkward to take photographs through the little gap. I figure originally the entrance way (douma) would have had no ceiling and this would have allowed access to this roof space. There are still things stored up there but since the douma now has fake ceiling, it’s not easy to get up there. In the future I’ll remove the fake ceiling…
Elsewhere, I found a beautiful old wooden box used for storing grain. It has some brushwork on the inside of the lid that mentions the Meiji period, so it’s a few years old. It’s been beautifully put together and sensitively mended too.
Meanwhile, I did a quick test mending some mud walls I found underneath the corrugated iron cladding on the storehouse. It’s coming off, that metal sheeting… very soon.
