A behind the scenes look at the Naruto Graduate Student exhibition from the perspective of the local Kamiyama people helping out to make the event a success!

Yamani House is one of the venues for the exhibition. Since it’s hard to notice the turnoff from the street, the locals decided to make some signs to show the way.

Digging post holes in the sandy, rocky soil - 50cm deep

Mr. Nishizaki and Mr. Komazaka of Shimobun did the work. The signs are also handmade by Mr. Nishizaki!

A couple of community-conscious alpha males! Mr. Komazaka on the left and (Vice-chair of the Town Council) Mr. Nishizaki on the right. Yamani means Mountain Two, so the symbol for Yamani is two lines with a mountain over top!

Drive 7.4km from Michi no Eki along route 438, and the sign is on the right hand side of the road. Make a sharp turn to the right, and go up the hill.

Parking space for seven or eight cars. Yamani House is up the hill on the left

Park here and walk another dozen meters or so up the drive.

Another sign freshly installed in the rock wall near the entrance.

Up the hill and there’s Yamani House.

I must take this opportunity also to thank the local residents living on either side of the Yorii-za venue, Mr. and Mrs Okada and Mrs Kawano, who so thoughtfully trimmed the grass and tidied up around the outside of the venue.

There are so many people behind the scenes who are helping out to make the exhibition happen. I feel guilty calling them “behind the scenes” since they are so important!

The people making the artworks are the Naruto University graduate students, but I want to be able to say that “The people who shined the brightest were the local residents!” I hope that’s the kind of exhibition we can have.
