Sarah Auffret came to work in Japan in 2007 at the same time as me and works and lives in Naruto.  When out for a bicycle ride one afternoon Sarah discovered the hidden beach on the lesser viewed side of Shimada Jima, an island on the Naruto skyline. The beach was absolutely buried in garbage. Disgusted by her discovery Sarah was unable to forget the image of the waves  breaking on a shore made entirely of plastic and PET bottle.  Determined to make an impact no matter how small Sarah went out and cleared garbage alone. When she showed photos of the beach to her colleagues, students  and friends they wanted to get involved and the work party grew in momentum. Now a group of twenty or more people are volunteering to attempt to clean the still extremely heavily littered beach, regularly.

For those who live in Tokushima, Sarah will appear on Ohayo Tokushima this Tuesday June 15th from 7.20am to 7.40am.

After travelling to Naruto to assist it’s really motivating to see what Sarah has done and how the beach clean has gained in momentum.  I feel inspired. That stream I cycle alongside in Kamiyama between the 20 and the 438 is filling up with dumped trash everyday. You probably can’t see it from your car.  Let’s clean it up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
